Functional cysts are the most common of the ovarian cysts types and form during a woman's normal menstrual cycle. During each month, tiny sacs are grown in the ovary to hold the eggs produced.  Normally after and egg has been released from the sac the sac will disolve on it's own.  Sometimes the sac may fail to dissolve or just won't break open and will continue to grow.  When this situation occurs the growth is called a functional cysts. Functional ovarian cysts will naturally disappear within a couple of weeks while some can take up to a month or more to disappear.
